So about 11 or 12 years ago, my friend Lindsay invited me to take a smocking class with her. Brian and I were newly married, so we were not planning on having babies any time soon but I thought it would be fun to learn for the future. So throughout the weekly class, we learned how to smock a day gown. I think I missed the last couple of classes and never finished the smocking nor had someone sew the dress together. So the unfinished dress (in pieces) sat in my closet for years. It even made it through a couple of moves. Still untouched. When we finally started having babies, it was boy after boy, and Brian had no intention of seeing his boys in smocking....heaven forbid a day gown! That is one thing I still haven't gotten used to here in the south...is seeing baby boys dressed in gowns! The bubble outfits, smocking, and others are cute...I just can't get over the gowns! So I didn't have much motivation to finish the dress. However, we did not find out what we were having with Jake, so I did get my friend Carla to re-teach me how to smock (since it had been a few years), and I was able to get the smocking part complete before he was born but never got someone to finish the dress. However, it didn't matter because baby #4 was another boy. :)
Now, however, when finding out baby #6 was a GIRL, I immediately thought of my unfinished smocked day gown and went back to my sweet friend Carla for help. After finding some extra material for the back and a pattern for the dress at a nearby store in Wetumpka (who gave it to me for free!), Carla graciously agreed to sew it up for me. She did a beautiful job and even added some extra pearls on the front and the sleeves. She also finished it the day before I went into labor. :)
The perfect outfit for Molly to come home in. It seemed so fitting after all these years. :)
