emerson street community garden day

We got to be a part of a community garden day this morning.  Every Saturday morning our neighbors, the Zimmers', have breakfast and prayer time at their home with their small group from their church, and then head over to the Emerson Street community garden to work.  Brian and the boys will sometimes go, as well.  (I normally stay home, so Oliver can get in his morning nap).

This morning, however, they had a big garden party for the neighborhood surrounding Emerson Street, an area adjacent to Cottage Hill.  Brian helped out with one of the stations, and the boys got to be a part of it as well.  It was such a fun morning.  It was a huge hit with about 50 kids attending.  They split the kids up into different groups, each naming themselves after a different vegetable...Loud Lettuce, the green beans, bad broccoli. etc.

Each station had the kids doing something different...

1.paint and design part of a fence to form the "Community Sticks Together" fence.  Each child came up with a word that described themselves and then painted it on their fence....which when built up, seeing all the words aligned together describes what community is all about! (To describe themselves, Nate picked "strong;" Jake picked "adventurous;" Henry picked "creative;" and Hudson picked "active").
2. picking some of the vegetables from the garden for their pizza they would later have for lunch.  They harvested it, washed it, and prepared it with herbs and olive oil to be cooked on the grill.
3. picking some mint from the garden, washing it, chopping it, and then adding it to the lemonade to make a deliciously fresh, mint lemonade to be served with the pizza.
4. helping with the dough to make individual flat bread pizzas
5. adding herbs from the garden to make the sauce

The kids worked hard all morning and then feasted on their hard work for lunch.  What a banquet it was!
